Összefoglaló:
A kétrészes tanulmány témája a magyar Shakespeare-kultusz egy kevéssé feldolgozott szegmense, a Szonettek. A drámák mellett háttérbe szoruló versekről napjainkban már mindenki elismeri, hogy Shakespeare legjelentősebb, legizgalmasabb művei közé tartoznak, melyek számtalan különböző értelmezésre adnak lehetőséget. A szonetteket Szabó Lőrinc 1921-es fordítása ismertette meg a szélesebb magyar közönséggel, azelőtt marginális, érthetetlen művekként tekintettek rájuk. A tanulmány első része részletes leírást ad a szonettekről, tárgyalja e versforma kialakulását és fejlődését, az egyes változatok pontos jellemzőit, majd a Shakespeare-szonettek keletkezésének kérdéseivel együtt tárgyalja a lehetséges értelmezéseket is, bemutatva mind az életrajzi olvasatot, mind azt a megközelítést, miszerint a szonettek költői játékként születtek. A tanulmány bemutatja a Szonettekkel foglalkozó magyar irodalmárok értelmezéseit is, és kísérletet tesz teljes körű vizsgálatukra és a magyar művelődéstörténetben való elhelyezésére.

Abstract:
The topic of this two-part paper is Shakespeare’s Sonnets, which has been given little attention in the history of the Hungarian Shakespeare. The poems, which are now seen as the most interesting and significant pieces Shakespeare wrote, give the reader a multitude of possible interpretations. The Hungarian public was first given the joy of reading the poems in good translation when Lőrinc Szabó, the famous poet, published his translation in 1921. Before that, the sonnets had been seen as marginal pieces besides the plays. The first part of the paper offers a description of the sonnet, including its birth and development, and the characteristic features of the varieties, then it goes on to discuss issues around the writing and publishing of the Sonnets, together with possible interpretations: the biographical reading and the approach that sees the poem as a poetic game. The paper, which also presents the interpretations of Hungarian scholars, is an attempt to give an exhaustive picture about the Sonnets and put them into the context of Hungarian cultural history.
