A kétrészes tanulmány témája a magyar Shakespeare-kultusz egy kevéssé feldolgozott szegmense, a Szonettek. A drámák mellett háttérbe szoruló versekről napjainkban már mindenki elismeri, hogy Shakespeare legjelentősebb, legizgalmasabb művei, melyek számtalan értelmezésre adnak lehetőséget. A szonetteket Szabó Lőrinc 1921-es fordítása tárta fel a magyar olvasóknak, azelőtt marginális, érthetetlen művekként tekintettek rájuk. A tanulmány második része részletesen bemutatja a szonettciklus felépítését és a Szonettek történetét, kontextusba helyezve annak szereplőit és bemutatva a cikluson átívelő metaforákat, képvilágot, költői eszközöket. A tanulmány befejező része a Szonettek magyarországi történetével, fordításaival, értelmezéseivel foglalkozik. Az átfogó elemzés egyben kísérletet tesz a Szonettek teljes körű bemutatására és elhelyezésére a magyar művelődéstörténetben.

Abstract:
The topic of this two-part paper is Shakespeare’s Sonnets, which has been given little attention in the history of the Hungarian Shakespeare. The poems, which are now seen as the most interesting and significant pieces Shakespeare wrote, give the reader a multitude of possible interpretations. The Hungarian public was first given the joy of reading the poems in good translation when Lőrinc Szabó, the famous poet, published his translation in 1921. Before that, the sonnets were seen as marginal pieces besides the plays. The second part of the paper describes the composition of the sonnet cycle in detail, together with the story in the poems, putting its characters into context and presenting the metaphors, imagery, and other poetic devices present throughout the cycle. The last paragraphs focus on the history, translations, and interpretations of the Sonnets in Hungary. The paper is an attempt to give an exhaustive picture about the Sonnets and put them into the context of Hungarian cultural history.
