A köztudatban az a tévhit él, hogy az Apponyi-féle oktatásügyi törvények születését csupán a korszak magyar kormányainak asszimilációs szándékú iskolapolitikája eredményezte. A kérdés azonban sokkal összetettebb ennél. Abban, hogy 1907-ben napvilágot lásson, majd elfogadásra kerüljön a Lex Apponyi a magyar parlamentben, több esemény, tényező is közrejátszott. Az egyik – melyről e tanulmányban ugyan nem esik szó, de a szerzőnek más munkái részletesen foglalkoznak vele – az 1906-ban rendezett bukaresti kiállításon tanúsított erdélyi román tanítói magatartás, a másik pedig a századfordulóra megszaporodó fegyelmi ügyek az erdélyi román pedagógusok és papok köreiben. A román történetírásban rendszeresen megjelenő „vád” a magyar tanfelügyelők „sovinizmusa”, melyről sokkal árnyaltabb képet kap az olvasó tanulmányunk elolvasását követően.

Abstract:
A common misconception about the educational laws of Apponyi is that they were only passed to promote assimilation according to the intention of the governments of Hungary of the time. But the question is much more complex. Many different events and factors had previously contributed to the presentation and eventual passing of Lex Apponyi in the Hungarian Parliament. One of these was the behaviour of Romanian teachers during the Bucharest Exhibition in 1906, which, although is not addressed by this article, has already been thoroughly discussed in other works by the author. Another such contributing factor was the increase of disciplinary actions among the Romanian teachers and priests in Transylvania around the turn of the century. An “accusation” regularly mentioned in Romanian historiography is the “chauvinism” of Hungarian school-inspectors, which is presented in a much more detailed manner in this paper to help readers get a better understanding of the situation.
